Atlanta — Luc Richard Mbah a Moute can only guard one player at a time.

That means Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles is facing a difficult decision about Mbah a Moute's defensive assignment in the team's playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks.

Should it be Hawks shooting guard Joe Johnson or power forward Josh Smith? Or should the 6-foot-8 Mbah a Moute even take a turn on 6-10 center Al Horford?

It's that kind of versatility that has made the second-year pro from Cameroon and UCLA such a valuable asset for the Bucks. At age 23 he already has defended nearly every star player in the league, from LeBron James to Kobe Bryant to Chris Paul to Chris Bosh.

And he often defends multiple positions in the same game. In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference series on Saturday, Mbah a Moute started out guarding the 6-7 Johnson, but the Bucks player also tried to help slow down the 6-10 Smith in Atlanta's 102-92 victory.

"It's tough; that's not for everyone," Skiles said. "A lot of times you have to mentally switch gears and (know) the tendencies of a player and all that. His versatility defensively has helped us."

Johnson is an all-star performer who doesn't get all the accolades accorded to James, Dwyane Wade or Bryant, but the Bucks know just how dangerous the Hawks guard and future free agent can be.

Johnson contributed 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists to the Hawks' victory on Saturday, yet Mbah a Moute did a respectable job against him.

"If Joe has a bad game in this series, more than likely it's going to be he had an off night," Skiles said. "There's not going to be a lot we can do about it, except we can try to make him less efficient, shoot a lower shooting percentage but he still gets his points. That's our goal."

Johnson's all-around ability makes Skiles reluctant to put Mbah a Moute on Smith or another Hawks player in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

"Joe is the player coming into Game 1 that hurt us the most," Skiles said. "We have to do a much better job of battling Josh down there. We let him catch it and the help was late.

"We've just got to get back to our normal defense. We can't all of a sudden leave the page. If we would have been playing our normal defense and they would have hurt us, then you've got to start thinking about adjustments and changing things. The first thing we've got to do is play like we did in the second half, more aggressive."

The Bucks battled back from a 22-point halftime deficit, trimming the margin in half after three quarters, but could not overcome the Hawks.

Mbah a Moute had eight points and six rebounds while playing 31 minutes in his playoff debut.

"Joe is a great scorer. I think sometimes he's underrated, how good he is," Mbah a Moute said after the Bucks' practice session Monday on the campus of Georgia Tech. "He's (nearly) 6-8 and is very strong, he can get the ball off whenever he wants. You can't do it by yourself. You've got to rely on your teammates."

Johnson made one incredible shot in the second half when he was blanketed by Mbah a Moute but somehow faded back and made a long jumper.

"Unbelievable shot," Skiles said. "In the games he's played against us he's hit five or six of those. You look at the tape and say we did everything we can possibly do other than foul him.

"Of course we don't want to foul a jump shooter. You've just got to hand it to him; great players make great plays."

Mbah a Moute was identified as a defender who would fit Skiles' system, and the Bucks grabbed him with the 37th overall pick in the 2008 draft. He immediately became a contributor as a rookie last season while the Bucks' first pick, Joe Alexander, struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness.

Skiles was never fearful of assigning Mbah a Moute to guard the league's elite players, and the young player's confidence grew.

He tightly defended Dirk Nowitzki when the Dallas forward hit a fadeaway shot to beat the Bucks in overtime early this season, and Mbah a Moute helped shut down Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant late in a Bucks' overtime victory in early January.

Durant, the NBA's leading scorer, said that the Los Angeles Lakers' Ron Artest and Mbah a Moute are the toughest defenders he has faced since entering the league.

Mbah a Moute defended Denver all-star Carmelo Anthony (10-of-29 shooting) in a Milwaukee victory at the Pepsi Center in March.

"I love playing defense and there's nothing more exciting than seeing those guys frustrated and winning the game at the end," Mbah a Moute said.

Sometimes Skiles has reduced Mbah a Moute's minutes if the coach needs more offense in a particular game or if he thinks the forward's defensive energy is lacking.

But it's a good bet Mbah a Moute will be needed extensively in the playoff series against the potent Hawks.

"He's very good with the ball and has the ability to raise up and shoot over people," Mbah a Moute said of Johnson. "He uses his body real well; he always bounces people off him."

Mbah a Moute said he couldn't name one most nightmarish matchup

"There's no toughest player," Mbah a Moute said. "Every team has an all-star or somebody who will give you trouble on the defensive end.

"Obviously you've got LeBron, Kobe, Carmelo, all those guys; you can name Joe Johnson, Dwyane Wade, Brandon Roy. Every team has somebody who is really tough."
